As most of you probably don’t know, I’m graduating in April of this year. Around June/July, I am planning on purchasing a new car. Judging by my name, you can probably tell I’m a fan of longer roofs. Over Christmas break, I took a test drive of a Focus ST and fell in LOVE. Along with that, my car was hit for the third time in six months by someone else, so I decided to take the money and stop fixing it (it’s drive-able and does not look terrible and no frame damage, most of the damage was metal under the skin.), leaving me with a good amount of additional money AND another reason for a new car, as well as a job in engineering to afford it**. I’ve had my desired spec ST picked out for a while, but I’ve always been a huge fan of wagons. Recently looking online, it seems that ‘14-15 Allroads are falling right near the price I’d be getting the ST at, or slightly more expensive but still affordable. I know I should #savethemanuals, but honestly I’ve always had a passion for wagons. I really am at 50-50 here, what does everyone think?
This (going for a similar look, but won’t ever spend that much for wheels):
Or this:
** P.S. If anyone knows someone looking to hire an engineer, I’m graduating magna cum laude in Chemical Engineering with 2 years of experience through my school’s co-op program!

You’ve seen alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the Allroad posts on here about failing parts and engine-out maintenance, yet you’re still considering one? My hat is off to you.

Yes, but I’m also concerned about buying a used VAG product with less warranty than the Focus new. It will probably require more research into the reliability of the newer end of the B8 range.

Start tucking away the payments you plan on making today, then get job, save some more, then order a V90.

14-15 with lower miles would still be in warranty so should be covered there. I assume that’s the plan.

Live with your current car for a couple of months until you figure out exactly what you can afford. Upon graduation with a ChemE degree**, I thought I’d only be able to afford an E39 M5, well it turns out that I was able to afford a lot more, so I didn’t get the E39 like planned and got something I really didn’t think I’d be able to afford.
**P.S. If anyone wants to hire a ChemE with 3 years frac experience, I need a job.

Those are older C5 allroads though, no? I was under the impression B8's are not like that. However, yes I am very aware of it and also my girlfriends brother has an ‘03 allroad and has gone through a lot with it.

The focus st isn’t a paragon of reliability either.

That Allroad will cost you way more in routine maintenance than a Focus ST will. Also the amount you’ll have to spend on fixing whatever is broken or is breaking on the Audi will probably eclipse the value of the Focus.

Funny how few roads are actually seen by Allroads..

Meaning that anything he saves on repairs goes into the depreciation when the warranty’s over. Ford’s well supported and cheaper.

That is true - older Audis are shitboxes, and newer Audis haven’t yet had a chance to prove themselves as shitboxes.

Allroad, as long as you’re going in with your eyes opened and knowledgeable about the cars possible issues, go for it. I had a b8 S4 for 3 years and sold it off with 80k on the clock, it was the epitome of reliability. But I’m a glutton for punishment. I just picked up an 09 S8 with 47k on it for a daily driver. Go for it, I don’t think you will be thinking to yourself... gee I wish I had purchased the focus instead. But, you may want to budget some fixit money just in case. Audis are a very nice place to be while driving. I’m a fan. If they only made a minivan, I’d still have two audis in the garage.

It’s going to cost a lot more to feed that Audi than the Ford, and you don’t have a job yet. Plus I would assume insurance on an financed Audi is a lot more than on a financed Ford Focus.

Those are all good points. Costs job or not are important. With that said, obviously I’m going to have a job first before I make this decision. I would never buy a car without a job. Probably should have made that distinction

Yes that is the plan. Also not modifying the shit out of it. However, the con is the Ford would be in warranty a lot longer.

Damn. I do have some PM experience but it sounds like it’s probably in an industry not for a CE.

If you’re graduating without any student loans debt and already have a job, I say go for it.
If you have no student loans debt and are graduating without a job, go for it after landing a job and working three months.
If you have student loans debt and no job, get a job, pay off student loans and then worry about a car.
I wish I had listened to the above.

(You’re obviously in the market for the newer variant of this ^^)
Try these for options. Hope this helps!

not knowing your full financial position, I would still recommend waiting a few months after working to figure out your standing. I know a few guys who after graduation thought “I can get a BMW, Acura, Audi...” 2 of these 3 found themselves continuing to eat ramen noodles despite making $60k. Income - taxes-rent-other living expenses and that sweet salary shrinks quick.
If between the two, I’d pick the focus.
